I love yogurt. But what I don't like so much is how they are flavored. Most of the time I find flavored yogurts to be too sweet and they never really taste like the fruit pictured on the pretty package...So what I like to do is to buy plain yogurt and dress it up with whatever I feel like at home. Most times I just use honey or maple syrup. This one posted here is my take on the "fruit-on-the-bottom" type of yogurt. It is easy to do and it can be assembled in advance and kept in the fridge.
The recipe bellow is for the fruit mix. The only sweetener used here is the natural sugar from the fruits, so don't expect an overly sweet fruit compote. If you want something sweeter, try using maple flavored yogurt or stir in some honey. Feel free to substitute any kind of dried fruits you have in hand or your favorite ones. Topping the yogurt with some chopped nuts would make this snack or breakfast item even more wholesome.
Fruit-on-the-bottom Yogurt Recipe:
makes about 1 cup of fruit mix
4 tablespoons of mixed dried fruits, chopped *
2 tablespoons of prunes, pitted and chopped
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
Place all ingredients in a jar and top it with water by an inch. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
When ready to use, place fruit mix on the bottom of a cup and top it with plain yogurt.
Enjoy it!
* Use any dried fruits you like: raisins, apples, berries, mangoes, pineapple, persimmon.

Great idea. I don't care for the flavored yogurts either. I buy plain and add non-sugar sweetener to it with fruit. It tastes so much fresher that way. Love your little yogurt jars!
I buy plain yogurt as well and make my own greek yogurt. SO much better!! Love the jar idea!
I can't wait to do this. It will be perfect for summer!
where did you get those cute jars?? Too cute!
What a delicious idea! And I want those cute little jars. Where did you find them?
Thats such a good idea, and your presentation is fantastic :)
Yummy! It would be fun to make a compote of fresh fruit in season and use it with the same idea. Great one, thanks!
Love the little jars, I would also love to know where you got them. Super cute idea too.
I, too, am a yogurt nut. In fact, I eat it every morning. I love those little jars you used!
The jars are from SPEGA La Natura Yogurt sold at Trader Joe's
Thank you everyone! For everybody who asked about the yogurt jars: they were from an Italian yogurt called Spega, I went to the store I got them from to see if got more info on them and maybe a picture of it but I didn't see them. I bet you Whole Foods would probably still carry them.
Rita, I too prefer to mix my own. I usually add fresh berries, when available, and a drizzle of honey, pack it in a little container and bring it to work.
In the winter I use frozen berries or other seasonal fruits.
I acquired the test for mixing my own yogurt when I used to eat at a "natural" restaurant in Brazil. Dessert there was often a bowl of homemade yogurt with honey on the bottom. Delicious!
I like to buy plain yogurt and flavour it at home as well. Often I go for just some honey on it but homemade jams are also good. Of course when the fresh local berries and fruit start showing up they will be a great option.
I love this post! I'm a big fan of yogurt, and I like a fruit pairing but also hate the standard fruit-on-the-bottom varieties. I'll have to try this out. And your yogurt jars are too sweet!
I love yogurt, beautiful photography and a well-written blog. It's a delight to read your posts. I only wished that I thought of buying Spega Yogurt when it was available - if only for the cute little jars.
Thank you for all your yogurt ideas and help! I am a major yogurt nut, but detest all sweet store brands! With your ideas i can have what I like all the time in my fridge!!
Thanks for the great post! I was wondering if I can use fresh fruits instead of dried? Will it work? Or does the fresh fruit have too much water content?
@ Tiffany: I think you van use fresh, but I would use right away though. You canalso mix in some fresh fruit with a spoon of jam, if the fruit is not sweet enough.
